SAN/Storage Engineer

Summary: As a Senior Systems Engineer for Storage you will be responsible for the design, installation and maintenance for enterprise class Storage Area Networks (SANs) / NAS and Backup Area Networks (BANs) environments in a global setting. Responsible for the overall performance, capacity management, integrity and security for both SAN & NAS environments. Under general supervision, required to conduct system analysis, development to keep all systems current with changing technologies and make sound technology recommendations from both a IT infrastructure and global business support initiatives:

For Systems Engineer SR. (Storage) assignment:

  • Designs, builds and implements SAN / NAS infrastructure systems. Follows established procedures to build and install hardware and software solutions. Provides feedback on procedures.
  • Researches & evaluates new storage technologies as assigned by senior team members. Meets with vendors and manufacturer product demos and training. Assists with establishing criteria for evaluating solutions.
  • Evaluate and install major storage software releases, storage hardware upgrades, evaluate and install patches and resolve storage software related problems.
  • Monitors SAN Fabric, NAS and Storage array sub-system configurations to ensure optimal performance and capacity levels for both storage and switch ports.
  • Performs storage provisioning for Unix, Wintel and VMware environments.
  • Configure and administer SAN fabric (switches / directors), storage arrays, and NAS filers.
  • Performs all aspects of trouble shooting storage issues , software, hardware, performance Including SAN fabric.
  • Provide recommendations and implement best practices to provide optimal storage performance and documented procedures and functional design specifications.
  • Provide local and remote support for SAN and NAS environments.
  • Performs storage provisioning for Unix, Wintel and VMware environments. Provide storage array capacity utilization reports and SAN fabric port capacity utilization.
  • Assist with support from storage perspective for enterprise class data protection environment, including the configuration and administration of backup hardware infrastructure components.
  • Require to support site to site data replication between major data centers and co-location site.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with business and cross-functional IT groups. Meets with business and IT staff to learn and understand requirements. Proactively collaborates and seeks solutions with peers.
  • Implements existing IT infrastructure processes and provides feedback on new processes as required. Follows documented procedures to meet compliance and security requirements.
  • Supports operational activities such as level three system support, root cause analysis, systems validation, performance tuning and capacity management. Works with Operations staff to improve monitoring  and alerting activities.
  • Mentors and provides guidance to members of other infrastructure teams. Documents procedures, demonstrates support tools and provides ad-hoc training.
  • Contributes to the development of policies, standards and processes within the systems engineering function.
  • Leads planning and support activities that improve the global operations initiatives.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

 

 

 

 

Qualifications:

  • Experience with designing and implementing SAN & NAS solutions and related services, such as(site to site replication, snapshots / business copies, de-duplication and storage virtualization )
  • Experience in a heterogeneous storage environment, preferably with global sites
  • Able to troubleshoot and resolve all storage replication traffic problems
  • Hands on knowledge of storage switches & directors specific to Cisco (Nexus).
  • Proficient in storage provisioning, administration and troubleshooting with NetApp hardware and software toolsets.
  • Primary experience with EMC & Netapp storage devices and their associated software administrations toolsets and O/S.
  • Experience or ability to run projects to migrate storage subsystems from same or different storage vendor technology in order to support company acquisitions
  • Extensive experience (5+ years) with SAN & NAS technologies including the ability to make design decisions for new implementations
  • Ability to troubleshoot components of SAN fabric, storage sub-systems (arrays) including NAS.
  • Experience designing and implementing disaster recovery storage solutions, supporting physical and virtual server environments.
  • Experience deploying and supporting SAN/NAS storage devices –EMC (VMAX, VNX, DataDomains, Xtremio, Isilon, Centerra,and CTA); NetApp (FAS arrays).
  • Must be knowledgeable with varies storage protocols, FC, FCoE, iSCSI, CIFs / NFS.
  • Experience deploying and supporting SAN fabrics – "Cisco" directors / switches preferred utilization FC or FCoE. Knowledge of Mcdata / Brocade directors – switches would be a plus.
  • Ability to make design decisions on leveraging storage in the VMWare environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to write and update concise and logical technical documentation, including, but not limited to; diagrams, charts, specifications and design models
  • Ability to communicate at an executive level and articulate business value of technical solutions
  • Ability to work with team members, at all levels, decision makers, and stakeholders to define business requirements and systems goals, and to identify and resolve business systems issues
  • Function as a mentor to provide knowledge transfer to peers and IT staff
  • Ability to make strategic hardware and software recommendations Other skills not required, but a definite plus:
  • Experience with Symantec's Netbackup , implementation & administration.
  • Knowledge of McData / Brocade SAN switches
  • Experience with the following storage vendor technologies ; IBM StorWize V7000, IBM SVC, IBM DS5xxx, HP EVA 6xxx
  • Experience with compliance of FDA (GxP), SOX, HIPPA, or related regulated environments
  • Microsoft, VMWare, and/or SAN Storage certifications
  • Experience with Unix / AIX, Linux, and VMware server administration and scripting
