Position: Java Architect

Location: Princeton, NJ

Duration: Long Term

Primary Focus : Solutions Architect/Application architect  from Java Background, exp  working with Business users and data modeling

This role is not strictly coding or back end processes—this person will have to be able to marry strategy and business needs, as well as being the "face" to the business units. Of all points, communication was the biggest factor in a viable candidate.

Should candidates be interviewed, expect a "high pressure" team interview requiring the ability to explain their experience with practical examples

· Experience: keep in mind we are looking for someone with a minimum of 10 years experience in IT (6 years as lead developer, 4 years with architecture/application design)

· past candidates submitted were infrastructure/data oriented—we are looking for enterprise application/solution oriented candidates

· Candidate needs to be from a tech background but have the ability to see the "big picture"

· Candidate should have experience with modeling activity diagrams

The Senior Architect will be responsible for:

• Work with Principal Architects to influence business strategy by explaining the capabilities of the architecture to management and the business.

• Maintain a broad business understanding including customer and market trends.

• Contribute to future vision and strategy by conducting research and proof of concepts

• Maintain a broad knowledge of new technical tools and trends, and apply those tools to improving business processes.

• Articulate and document a solution architecture vision.

• Map business capabilities and services to IT solutions, and plan IT solutions for future business opportunities.

• Assist in aligning business strategy to IT strategy, in ways that adhere to the IT maxims.

• Create solution architectures that are leverage-able for future re-use and actively seek opportunities to leverage existing IT solutions for new business offerings and services.

• Align IT solutions with business functions to improve flexibility, facilitate large scale reuse, and improve comprehensibility and visibility of SR&Ts value to the business.

• Partner with business, Research and other FCE and SR&T teams, where appropriate, in designing IT solutions that match the needs of the business.

• Continuously improve processes, technologies, applications to provide best value to business.

• Establish standards in best practice design patterns and pitfalls to ensure that IT solutions perform to expectations.

• Assist development teams in developing and enhancing detailed application designs and interfaces.

• Assess and formulate go forward architecture and technology direction for IT solutions

• Aggressively identify enterprise IT application solution/technology initiatives that are of value. Collaborate with other architects and teams in execution of the initiatives.

• Facilitate cross team and cross component collaboration.

• Review and approve project deliverables to ensure that they are architecturally sound and achieve as great a degree of fit with the desired architectures as possible.

• Facilitate leverage and reuse of components, solutions and technologies across teams and projects.

• Work with Principal Architects to provide input and assistance from a solution design perspective to the RFP response team

• Work with Principal Architects for Cost Estimation using Function Point or Use Case Analysis

 

Additional responsibilities include influencing business strategy by explaining the capabilities of the architecture to management and the business, and maintaining a broad understanding of the business including customer and market trends. A Sr Architect must have the ability to contribute to future vision and strategy by conducting research and proof of concepts, maintaining a broad knowledge of new technical tools and trends, and envisioning how those tools could be used in improving the business processes.

Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Experience:

• 10 years experience in IT, specifically in software development.

• 6+ years as a Lead Developer,

• 4+ years experience in IT Architecture and application design

Technology and Architectural Competency:

• Performance modeling, profiling, monitoring, and troubleshooting.

• Experience with industry standard architecture and design methodologies and processes

• UML Modeling and use of Sybase PowerDesigner

• Tradeoff analysis

• Prototype/experiment/simulate

• Prepare architectural documents and presentations

• Technology trend analysis/roadmaps

• Strategic thinking, be able to take an enterprise or system viewpoint

• Strong Java and web application experience

• Windows and .NET experience

 

Experience in one or more service delivery/operational domains is desired:

• Item authoring

• Assessment packaging and delivery

• Scanning

• Scoring and Statistical Analysis

• Reporting

• Registration and Candidate Management

• Scheduling and Test Center Management

• Logistics

 

Varied Experience in following areas is required:

• Rich and varied IT solutions design and development experience

• Designing large scale software systems and leading development efforts

• Designing and implementing large scale system integration efforts

• Architecture principles and frameworks (TOGAF, Zachman, Gartner, DOD etc.)

• Application and Integration design methodologies, standards and best practices (SOA, OOAD, AOP)

• Business requirements gathering, Joint Application Design (JAD), Business Process Modeling (BPM) and Business Process Decomposition processes

• Full software development lifecycle (SDLC) experience

• UML and Business process modeling

• Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) and business integration

• Industry standard processes (SDLC, CMMI, Change Mgmt, ITIL, etc.)

• Familiarity with User Interfaces (Web, Legacy, Handhelds) and usability methodologies

• Data warehouse design and data modeling

• Disaster recovery and business availability

• Vendor package selection (Leverage, Build and Buy decisions)

• Familiarity with Audit and compliance policies (SOX, HIPAA)

• Technical application and Infrastructure architecture design experience is desirable

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Hands-on experience in one or more of the following technologies is required:

• Java , J2EE, Web services and XML

• Java Application Servers (WebSphere, JBoss)

• Web Servers

• C++ , .NET or COBOL development

• Integration technologies including ESB, messaging technologies, JBoss WS-CXF, SFTP

• IBM MQ integration environments

• COGNOS and/or Oracle reporting environments

• IDMS, Oracle and/or SQL Server database technologies

• Windows, Varieties of Linux operating systems
