Unix System Admin /  Solaris Admin for ASD Laboratory

 

Location:- Phoenix Arizona / Detroit Michigan.

Number of Position:- 2 (1 – Unix System Admin/ 1- Solaris Admin)

 

Position Summary:

 

Daily operation and support (24x7 on call) of laboratory systems associated with the OnStar Advanced Development & Concepts (ADC) group efforts. This function encompasses the following areas:

·         Workstation(s) (Desktop / Laptop) support.

·         ADC Server(s) operation and support.

·         Network infrastructure (Internal and External) support and maintenance.

·         On-call support for pilot environment operation duties as required (rotational).

 

This position is required to have remote environment access. To this end, it is suggested that personnel have high speed internet access.

 

Responsibilities and Essential Duties:

 

·         Interacts with users by phone, e-mail, or in person on a 24x7 support basis. Documents problem area and resolution efforts into the appropriate support database.

·         Performs pilot environment support activities equivalent to first and second level efforts, on a rotational basis.

·         Ensures that the development systems and associated pilot environments achieve high levels of availability (98% and above).

·         Participates in the documentation efforts associated with various operational aspects of the laboratory.

·         Evaluates new approaches and methods to achieve enhanced capabilities and levels of service.

Qualifications:

·         Strong inter-personal and communication skills; capable of writing purchase justifications, training users in complex topics, making presentations to an internal audience, and interacting positively with upper management and lab facility users.

·         Ability to solve problems quickly and completely.

·         Ability to identify tasks which require automation and automate them (Independent problem solving; self-direction).

·         A solid understanding of both UNIX-based (Linux, Solaris, HP-UX) and Microsoft Windows (2000, 2003, XP) operating systems. Adept at the use of performance analysis methods to tune systems, and resolve connectivity problems.

·         A solid understanding of networking/distributed computing environment concepts (Experience configuring network file systems (NFS), network file synchronization schemes, license manager configuration, etc).

·         Experience with TCP/IP networking protocols (ability to debug and manage at the network level, firewall management).

·         Experience with client/server architecture management (Web Services, etc).

·         Experience with network/host security management (LDAP / Active Directory, UNIX, etc).

·         Experience installing/configuring peripherals.

·         Ability to program in an administrative language (Perl, shells).

·         Exposure to database management (backup, ETL, transactional replication approaches).

·         True dedication to full lifecycle support, from requirement definition through data center/pilot implementation and maintenance.

 

Education and/or Experience

 

·         Four to seven years' systems administration experience in medium environments (heterogeneous sites with up to a 100 systems, encompassing a minimum of three operating systems) using both UNIX and MS Windows operating systems.

 

Desirable:

 

·         Significant programming background in any applicable language (Perl, bash, C, etc.).

 

Reasoning Ability

 

·         Capable of applying troubleshooting techniques appropriately, as indicated by both ASD training guidelines and personal experience.

·         Capable of managing/addressing the needs of an intense development environment to address real-time problems.

·         Adherence to management guidelines, and management / enforcement of usage policies / procedures.

 

Representative Work Task Description

 

1.       Install / Update of Platform Operating Systems

a.       Linux, Solaris, HP-UX, MS Windows XP, and MS Windows Server 2003

b.      Creation and management of G4U images

2.       Install and Manage all Deployed Software

a.       Antivirus, MS Office, Terminal Emulation, etc

3.       Technical Resource for Platform Hardware and Software

a.       Perform hardware configuration changes

b.      Request POC and resolution coordinator for hardware issues

4.       ASD Domain Active Directory Administration

a.       Create user IDs

b.      Create and maintain organizational units (OUs) and assign permissions with group policies

c.       WINS, DNS, DHCP, Printers, File Shares, etc.

5.       Disaster Recovery Process Coordinator (Backup Assurance, Off-site Storage Coordination, etc)

6.       Server Room Environment Integration (Platform Installation, Upgrade, Monitoring, etc)

7.       Network Management (Access Points, Switches, Drops, etc)

a.       Security Procedure Enforcement

b.      Usage Monitoring

8.       Asset Inventory Management

9.       Manage Vehicles and Lab Garage

a.       Track EDT vehicle usage

b.      Assist with vehicle transfers (EDT, competitive, other)

c.       Provide access to RenCen/lab garage

d.      Provide assistance and instructions for test drives, especially with regard to non-ASD or Engineering employees

10.   Lab Facility Management

a.       Report and track facility issues

b.      Provide access to facilities/maintenance employees

c.       Initiate requests for required changes

11.   OnStar Product Validation Integration

a.       Provide administration support for network and test platforms.
